Larry loved the Lord, his wife, children and grandchildren, his many hobbies and interests. His life was fueled by love and his curiosity, sense of humor and zest for life. He was born entering this earth at Lakeside Hospital in Beaver Dam. Larry was the first born child of Auke and Evelyn (Voortman) Douma. Soon, nine siblings followed into this world and at the age of five years, Larry moved with his family from Blancae Road to East Friesland Road to be raised on a dairy farm. After a restless early life, Larry spent most of his life as a carpenter, although he had many other skills and abilities. During his early life he owned a dairy farm, worked as a lift truck mechanic, drove semi, made paper bags, owned his own construction business and worked for others. Most recently he worked for 20 years at UW-Madison as a carpenter on campus and at family housing, which he enjoyed. Retirement came early due to his knees and heart. Larry pursued the ministry and became a Methodist pastor serving the Coloma and Westfield churches.
Larry enjoyed playing with and watching his grandchildren, especially in sports. He coached many years in the Fall River recreation program and was coach of the middle school football team. He had a life-long love of basketball, playing from a small child to coaching and refereeing many years until was 57 years old. Larry also loved riding his many Harley-Davidsons, constantly remodeling and updating the home he designed and built with the help of many in 1992, working in his workshop designing and building furniture, reading and learning, traveling, hunting and fishing experiences and new cars, as he had many 'repairable autos' as a young man. He was preceded in death by his father; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Marv and Noreen Dilley; three brothers-in-law, Bill and Richard Dilley and Rich Meedema.
