Dorothy Garland

Dorothy (Higgins) Garland, 98, of Great Falls, died of natural causes Tuesday, Jan. 17, at a local nursing home.

At her request, no services are planned at this time. Cremation has taken place under the direction of O'Connor Funeral Home.

Dorothy was born in Poplar, Mont., on Oct. 6, 1913, to Nina Mae Thomas and Luther M. Higgins. Dorothy married George W. Garland on Aug. 17, 1939, in Malta. Any education she had beyond high school was self-taught, and teach herself she did.

She was a master of all trades over the years. During the war, she was the manager of a WPA sewing room. She later worked at a laundry, where she did alterations and will always be known as an incredible seamstress. She also had her own upholstery shop for many years.

Dorothy helped her husband raise Shetland ponies and gave rides at fairs, and drove truck and trapped minnows for their live–bait business. She was a bookkeeper for several businesses and built a three-room addition on to their existing home to include wiring and plumbing. On occasions of a birthday, she made a mean white cake with cooked frosting. Early on, she enjoyed playing cards with the neighbors and learned to love to hunt deer and antelope. She looked forward to the first day of the season. She was a good shot, but took a long time pulling the trigger. She also enjoyed taking pictures of the kill, but her husband accused her of letting the meat spoil before she snapped the shutter. Due to her husband being afflicted with polio, she was the main breadwinner in the family and she took her job seriously. In later years, after moving with her daughter and family to Cascade, she worked as hostess at the local Senior Citizens Center. At the young age of 84, after being honored with being chosen Senior Citizen of the Year, she retired.

Our mother Dorothy was quite a woman.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Sheilah Mae (Denny) Garland Valentine of Lincoln, Calif., and Mavis Ann Garland (William) Peterson of Cascade; grandchildren, Bart (Glenda) Peterson of Denton, Travis (Heidi) Peterson of Spokane, Wash., and Zabrae (William) Valentine of Oakland, Calif.; and great-grandchildren, Brien, Kaycee, Halen, Myah, Emma and George.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Garland, in 1965; and an infant son, Dwane.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name are suggested to the donor's choice.
