Allen White was raised to be a farmer, just as numerous generations of his forefathers had been. Though Allen remained a life-long farmer, his children had greater opportunities. Most took them. In 1872, the C&O Railroad (Chesapeake & Ohio), came across from Richmond, Virginia, into Cabell County, WV.

With that came the opening of the Logan (WV) Coalfield. And, mining in almost unheard of proportions, literally consuming the county.

Salt was also another product that increased its output after the Civil War. West Virginia's salt is estimated as enough to supply the nation for 2000 years.

Allen White married Minerva Smoot White, a second cousin, when she was 15 years old. They were married for nearly 50 years when Allen died in 1928.

Known children of Allen and Minerva:
• Cara White (1869-• Mary White (1878-1938)
• Melvin (Reverend) White (1881-1956)
• Flora White (1883-1907)

The same year Allen died, Minerva remarried. Her groom was Henry Mitchell, a widower. He died in 1934. Minerva, the next year.
