(Added at top of clipping: “April 4, 1961 Wooster Ohio Daily Record.” Date from other records is her death date, not the obituary pub. date.)
“Harriet A. PAINTER, resident of 1577 Cleveland Rd., Wooster, since 1909, died at her home Tuesday after a brief illness. Mrs. Painter had celebrated her 90th birthday in December with a reunion of all 26 members of her family.
Born of Vermont forebears on a farm near Bedford, daughter of Solomon S. and Sarah BARLOW DRAKE, she attended Ohio Northern Academy at Ada and graduated from the Boston School of Oratory. In an autobiography which she wrote for her family she tells about riding horseback through the countryside near her home to give lessons in elocution.
She and Walter E. Painter of Hanover, O., were married June 18, 1895. When Mr. Painter took a teaching position at Wooster Academy in 1909, they moved to the Cleveland Road home, then the first building north of the Cleveland Burbank intersection.
Their four daughters are Sarah J., of the College of Wooster Library staff, Mrs. Ray A GRIFFITH of Massillon, Mrs. Fred A. PALMER of Worthington, and Mrs. W. Dean Hopkins of Lakewood. There are five granddaughters, four grandsons, and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Miss Mary J. DRAKE and her brother, Alonzo DRAKE, both of Wooster.
Mrs. Painter was a member of the Westminster Church and until a few weeks ago her home was the meeting place for the prayer group of the Westminster Women’s Association. For many years she had been a member of the Wooster-Wayne Chapter of the D.A.R. and of the Wayne Township Housekeepers Club.
She was a prodigious reader, interested in current events and public affairs to the end of her life. She had friends of all ages."
