HARRISON J. GROTEWOHL

Harrison James Grotewohl, the son of Henry and Johanna Davis Grotewohl, was bom June 15, 1863 at Elkader. Iowa. He passed into eternal rest at Hartley, Iowa, on January 1, 1961 at the age of 97 years, 6 months, and 17 days.

He had the distinction of being Hartley's oldest citizen. He attended the public schools near his boyhood home, and was graduated from the high school at Elkader. He had resided in the Hartley community since 1901, having previously lived in western Nebraska and southern Missouri for a short time. He was active in the lumber business for forty years, and had been manager of the Floete Lumber Co. here for thirty of those years. He retired from that position in 1930.

He was married to Lydia Elizabeth Appelman on Sept. 4, 1888 at Clermont, Iowa. To them were born five children, two of whom preceded him in death. They were a son, Harrison James, Jr., and a son. Laurence. His wife alse preceded him in December of 1928.

Mr. Grotewohl was very active in public life, having served the community in many ways. He was a member of the Hartley School Board, had served On the Town Council, and for many years was the local Justice of the Peace. He was a former member of the Universalist Church. He was well-known for his work in the Masonic Lodge, in which he was a 50 year member of Beacon Lodge No. 495, A. F. and A. M. He was also a member of the P. S. Parvin Consistory No. 5 at Sioux City. He was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Golden Sheaf Chapter No. 181, and of the Modern Woodmen of America, Camp 1581, in all of which he had distinguished himself in various offices.

Left to cherish his memory are his three children: Leland of Muskegon, Mich., Helen and Hewitt, both of Hartley; one granddaughter, Joan, of Lansing, Mich.; three great-grandchildren at Muskegon, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. C. S. Cawthorne of Waukegon, Ill.: as well as other relatives and many friends.
