Jean McCormick Burrows passed away, Friday, July 3, 2015 at her home in Lewisville, Texas with family at her side.
Jean was born into the farming family of Fowler and Pearl Davis McCormick in Olustee, Oklahoma on November 6, 1932. She was raised between there and West Texas. She graduated from Hale Center High School where she played basketball and was known for her mean hook shot. She attended the University of Texas in Austin where she met her future husband, Hiram Worth Burrows, Jr., of New Boston, Texas. They married in 1951 in Austin and began their life together travelling the West as Mr. Burrows began his career in oil exploration. Career change took them for long stints in Memphis, Dallas and Mexico City. They remained married for 60 years until his death in 2011.
Jean was thankful for her travels because she witnessed the “amber waves of grain” and “purple mountain’s majesty” of America that fostered in her a deep love of country. She was passionate about playing bridge with her various bridge clubs and leaves many friends without a partner. Anyone who knew her knew of her love of flowers, her garden and the birds that came to visit there. If you visited in the late afternoon, there was always a good show at the birdbath. In her garden can be found flowers passed down from family generations before her. But, her greatest skill and joy in life was her knack for making and keeping friends, all of whom were so supportive during her time of illness. She was valued for her honesty, frankness, wise counsel and her incredibly good sense of humor and quick wit. One friend said of her “If she had been born today, she would be a life coach”. She instilled in her children a love of music, a love of learning, the value of laughter and enjoyment, and most of all, a strong sense of social justice. There is no end to how much she will be missed by family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hiram Worth Burrows, Jr., and her son, Hiram Worth Burrows, III. She is survived by daughter, Michelle Burrows and son-in-law John L. Pollard; grandson Trenton Worth Burrows and wife Ellen E. Burrows; niece Anita Smith; and niece Monica Weidmann and her husband Duke.
