Andrew Russell Aandahl, 90, died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Bella Vista, Arkansas on September 9, 2003. Andrew was born on the North Dakota farm of his parents, George and Bessie Aandahl, on October 2, 1912, while the threshing machine hummed east of the barn. He was educated at the Svea Consolidated School, Barnes County, North Dakota and the North Dakota State University, Fargo, North Dakota and received his doctorate from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa.
Andrew was a U.S. Navy veteran and served on the destroyer USS Haynsworth in the Pacific during World War II.Andrew was a Soil Scientist with the United States Department of Agriculture during most of his career. He was a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy and the Soil Science Society of America. He retired in 1968 in order to have time to prepare a general soil Map of the Great Plains and to write a book describing the Soils of the Great Plains using the new soil classification developed by the American Soil Scientists mainly during the 50’s. This system made the soil surveys more useful. The book was published in 1982.
He was very interested in his genealogy and after several trips to Norway he collaborated with Odd Meringdal in the preparation of the book “The Aandahl Family”.
He was preceded in death by his parents George and Bessie Aandahl and his brothers Clifford and Russell. He was also preceded in death by his wives Effie Marie Smith and Philippine Willet. He is survived by his wife Viola E. Aandahl, his children Virginia Aandahl Vinton, Elizabeth Aandahl Springer and Dennis James Aandahl, his step children Steve Willet, Miriam Korklewski, Fay Winchell and Byron Winchell, his grandchildren Christopher Jay Aandahl Vinton, Elizabeth Ann Aandahl Vinton, James Francis Springer, Teresaa Ann Springer and Timothy Scott Aandahl, his step grandchildren Christopher Willet Zachary Willet, Katie Willet, Amanda Winchell and Adam Winchell, his great-grandchildren Jacee Springer, Jacob Springer and Molly Malone Vinton, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held on Friday, September 12 at 10 AM at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Bella Vista.
