The news of the death of Burt Abbott, which occurred at Hastings Monday afternoon, was a sudden surprise and shock to his friends and relatives here, for few thought he was in serious condition. Mr. Abbott's health has not been the best for some time, a complication of diseases having afflicted him. It was in order to better battle with these diseases that he was taken to Hastings on Wednesday of last week, and place under the care of Dr. W. B. Kern. He was getting along nicely when a small scratch on his forehead caused erysipelas to set in, which caused his death. The remains were brought to Wood River and the funeral was held Wednesday morning at the home of his sister, Mrs. F. C. Dodge, Rev. J. C. Irwin having charge of the services. The remains were laid to rest in the Wood River cemetery. Mr. Abbott was one of the pioneers of Hall county. He was born in Hadley, Canada, in November 1840 and came to Nebraska in 1866. With the exception of a few years, prior to 1894 which he spent in Alliance, he has always made his home with Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Dodge. He was unmarried. Mr. Abbott was a man who was known for his industry and thrift. He was a tireless and energetic worker. He had many friends throughout the country for he was a man of upright character. Those who mourn his departure have the sympathy of all.
