Herbert James Abel was a service casualty of WW1

Herbert was born in the spring of 1876 in Bow, the son of John William and Esther Abel (nee Casey) who were married in Poplar on Christmas Eve 1873

In 1911 the family were living in Atley Road in Bow although by this time Esther had sadly passed away. Herbert is listed as a general labourer aged 35

On the 24th July, Herbert enlisted in the Australian Forces and served as Private 3679 1st Bn. Australian Infantry
and a year later was wounded in action in France and returned to England with serious leg wounds. Herbert died at Stoke on Trent military hospital on the 21st November 1916

He was buried in the family grave at the City Of London Cemetery Square 193 Grave 57413 aged 39 and is commemorated on a Commission Headstone and a family Private Memorial.
