He was born in Newark, NJ and was a graduate of Seton Hall University. He proudly served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army as a First Sergeant, receiving a special commendation for his valiant efforts.
A successful business owner, he owned multiple parking garages throughout areas in downtown Newark until his retirement in 1998. He and his family enjoyed summer vacations in Monmouth Beach until that became their full time residence in 1972. His passion was traveling, Atlantic City trips, and being with his family and loved ones.
Charles was predeceased by his sister, Anna Nina Abruzzo, and brothers, Samuel Blackie Abruzzo, William Abruzzo, George Abruzzo and Leonard Abruzzo.
He is survived by his wife, Doris, of whom he was married to for over 58 years; sisters, Veronica La Bella of Oceanport, Lillian Anzalone of Long Branch; and brother, Gerard Abruzzo of Long Branch. Also surviving are his daughters Francine Goodman and husband John of Sea Bright, Vivian Rice and husband Stephen of Monmouth Beach, son Charles Abruzzo of Oceanport, and grandchildren, JJ Goodman, Darci Goodman, Samantha Abruzzo, Carlie Rice, Stephanie Rice and Francesca Abruzzo.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 13 from 6-9 pm at the Damiano Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Avenue, on the corner of Third Ave., Long Branch. Funeral Monday, 10:00 am at the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11:00 am Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, Rumson. Entombment will follow at Woodbine Mausoleum, Oceanport.
