NORCROSS: A.J. Acklin, visited by rap stars in last days
By KEVIN COTTRELL JR.

Ajmal "A.J." F. Acklin, 11, was not a typical sixth-grader. Living with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, diagnosed Dec. 20, 2004, the one thing that kept him vibrant was rap music.

"A.J. was inquisitive, intelligent and very mature for his age," said his mother, Clarine Andujar White of Norcross. "But most of all, he loved rap music."

His favorite artists were Atlanta's own T.I. and Ludacris. Radio host Griff and fellow A-Team Morning Show members of Hot-107.9 FM decided to make Christmas 2006 a memorable one for A.J.

A.J.'s short Christmas list included a Playstation 3, clothes, shoes and a laptop computer. Bearing gifts, on Dec. 21 the A-Team led by platinum-selling rapper T.I. visited A.J. at his Norcross residence.

"T.I. bought video games for the Playstation 3 that Hopewell Baptist Church gave him," Mrs. White said. "Ludacris came the next day with a specially made Atlanta Falcons jersey, and A.J. lit up when he spoke with them."

A.J.'s brother, Khayree Acklin of Norcross, was his bone marrow donor. After a two-year fight with leukemia, A.J. died Wednesday at his Norcross residence. The funeral is noon today at Hopewell Baptist Church. Raleigh Rucker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

"A.J. never got a chance to play his Playstation 3," his mother said. "But he was alert when T.I. and Ludacris visited him, and I am very glad of that." That alone was music to his ears.

Survivors include his father, Ronald Acklin Jr. of Savannah; his stepfather, Leroy White of Norcross; six sisters, Ebonee Oliver of Norcross, Tiffani Andujar, of Norcross, Imani Acklin of Atlanta, Ronasia Acklin of Atlanta, Deairra Acklin of Decatur and Najlaa Acklin of South Carolina; three stepsisters, Kenyetta Hall, Desiree Hall and Kristen White, all of Atlanta; another brother, Yaasiyn Andujar of Norcross; his paternal grandparents, Jeanette Acklin of North Carolina and Ronald Acklin Sr. of Ohio; and his maternal grandparents, Audrey Davis of Stockbridge and Ruben Andujar of Puerto Rico.
