NEWPORT NEWS - Andre Pernell Acklin, born Aug. 29, 1965, was called to eternal rest on Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997, at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He was born in Newport News, where he attended elementary school and was a 1985 graduate of Menchville High School.

He was employed by Sea Pride Seafood Co. prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Myer. He was assigned to the "Old Honor Guard," whose primary function was to protect the president of the United States. He served until he was medically released.

He is survived by two sons, Andre P. Acklin and Anthony LaVonne Acklin of Newport News; mother, Cynthia Acklin; one sister, Kiona Acklin; grandparents, Seymore and Gertrude Crocker; four aunts and three uncles; fiance, Windy Fenner, all of Newport News; and one nephew and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at Way of the Cross Church Int., 617 48th St., Newport News, with Dr. Bishop James C. Jackson officiating. Viewing will begin at noon on Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, and the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, in Arlington National Cemetery with military honors.
