Black sheep of Italy's Agnelli family. Born in New York, the son of Italian Senator Giovanni ("Gianni") Agnelli (see memorial this website) and Donna Marcella Caracciolo, he was named after his grandfather who was killed in a 1935 airplane crash. Raised among the elite in Turin and studied at Princeton University where he graduated with a degree in oriental literature and philosphy. Never interested in the Agnelli's automotive business, he held a director position in the Agnelli family's Turin soccer team Juventus for a time; the team won the Heysel Champions league final against Liverpool, and the Intercontinental Cup finals at the time. On leaving Juventus he followed his real passion, Oriental philosophy, which took him to India, Pakistan, Libya and Iran. While avoiding the Agnelli limelight, he was arrested in 1990 for possessing heroin in Malindi, Kenya; although released without charges, further alienation from society resulted. The loss of his beloved cousin, Giovanni Alberto Agnelli, is thought to have led to his suicide. Cause of death: suicide by leaping from a viaduct of the autostrada near Fossano, Cuneo, Italy.
