Dr. Arthur Mason Ahearn passed away on July 25th, 2014, at the Medical University of South Carolina after a short illness.

There will be a memorial service at Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church in Georgetown on July 30th, 2014, at 11:00AM. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a time to be announced.

Dr. Ahearn was born in New York City on November 5th, 1936, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Ahearn of Westfield, New Jersey.

He graduated from the University of Rochester and Cornell University College of Medicine, and he obtained his orthopaedic surgical residency training at the United States Army Tripler Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. After serving as Chief, Orthopaedic Service, US Army Dwight D. Eisenhower Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia, Dr. Ahearn practiced solo orthopaedics in Orangeburg, SC before moving to Georgetown, SC in 1981. He was an attending physician at Georgetown Memorial Hospital, where he was Chief, Department of Surgery from 1990 to 1992 and Chief, Medical Staff from 1994 to 1995and at the Waccamaw Community Hospital, where he was Chief, Medical Staff from 2001 to 2003.

Dr. Ahearn joined the South Carolina Army National Guard in 1989, and he commanded the state's 251st Evacuation Hospital during its deployment to Saudi Arabia in Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Colonel Ahearn retired as the SCARNG State Surgeon in 1996. Upon his retirement, he was presented the Order of Palmetto by Governor David M. Beasley.

Dr. Ahearn was predeceased by his parents and his son Peter Cheek Ahearn. He is survived by his loving wife, Rita Grubbs Ahearn, his sister, Sally James, his five children, John Mason Ahearn, Dr. Ella Ahearn Whelan, Susan Elizabeth Ahearn, Noel Ahearn Rinehart, and Dr. Briggs Mason Ahearn, and by five grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church, Box 674, Georgetown, SC 29442 or to The Wounded Warrior Foundation, 11905 Bowman Drive, Suite 510, Fredericksburg, VA 22408.
