She was born in Parsons, Kansas, the daughter of the late Theodore and Minnie (Weber) Schauffler. She married John Robert “Bob” Ahern at the early age of 18, while he was in Army flight school in Lawrence, Kansas.
Bob served his country in the US Army, fighting in WWII and the Korean Police Action, thus allowing Veda the opportunity to travel and live throughout the United States and Europe. Veda loved the ocean, especially when she was there with her children and grandchildren. She passed on her wealth of knowledge and love for seashells, seafood, the ocean tides, etc., to all of us. She had a good eye for finding antiques; she was a master at playing Bridge, and always enjoyed arts and crafts. She was most at home with her feet in the sand sitting under an umbrella listening to the music of the waves.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Ahern; her children, an infant who died at birth, his twin, Rodney, (age 2); Robert Brian Ahern; and her sister, Geneva McKinley.
The family will receive friends from 2 – 3 pm on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga Street, Kingsport. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 3 pm with Rev. Jack Edwards, officiating.
Mrs. Ahern will be interred with her husband, LTC John R. Ahern, in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
