By the time of his sudden death from heart disease the avuncular Aikins was a respected and much liked figure in Canadian medicine.
In his will Aikins left his medical books to the Academy of Medicine; his estate, worth over $90,000, included $9,950 in radium, described as his 'stock in trade'.
