Mrs. Alderman (Put here by Mrs. J. A. Corley 2-22-1938) 12 Mar 1930

The identity of Mrs. Alderman has not been determined, but Mrs. J. A. Corley was Della L. Crist, daughter of Stevie H. Crist and Virginia A. Gibson (both buried in the Bethel Cemetery)(see Stephen H. Crist household, 1900 Anderson County census, ED 13, dwelling and family 369). In 1930 John A. Corley and his family, including his wife Della, were living near the Bethel Cemetery (see John A. Corley household, 1930 Anderson County census, ED 1-23, dwelling and family 235. He was enumerated immediately after Steve Wilson, who lived across the road from the Cemetery). The original marker at Mrs. Alderman’s grave is a simple, homemade marker with the lettering inscribed with a crude instrument. John Corley placed similar markers at the graves of his mother and grandmother in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Elmwood, Van Zandt County (Email message to Texas Mike, 26 June 2002, with pictures of those markers. A comparison of the letters and numerals indicates that they were made by the same person. The marker for his grandmother, Sallie Curlin, states that it was “made and erected by J. A. Corley 2-22-38….” the very same date as the marker for Mrs. Alderman). It is assumed that Mrs. Alderman was a relative or close friend of Della Crist Corley.
