US Congressman. A native of New York State, he lived in Michigan before moving to Two Rivers, Wisconsin, in 1851, and becoming a successful in the manufacture of lumber. He entered political office as a superintendent of schools in 1855, and rose to chairman of the Manitowoc County board of supervisors before serving in the Wisconsin State House of Representatives in 1859. Moving to Chicago, Illinois, in 1861, he engaged in the wholesale grocery business and was chairman of the Chicago City Council in 1876. In 1877, he was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois' 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving until 1883. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his former business pursuits until his death at age 65. US Congressman James Franklin Aldrich was his son.
