John L. Aldridge, 82, of Tuscumbia, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2012.
His family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. today at Morrison Funeral Home of Tuscumbia. His funeral service will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, of Tuscumbia, with Brother Barrett Long officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, of Tuscumbia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter L. and Zannie Aldridge, and sister, Dimple Lyle.
Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Lila Smith Aldridge, of Tuscumbia; his sons, Steve Aldridge and wife, Jamie, of Sheffield, Drew Aldridge and wife, LeAnn, of Tuscumbia, Stuart Aldridge and wife, Cindy, of Alabaster; and his four grandchildren, Hunter, Katelyn, Lindsey and Robin Aldridge.
Pallbearers are Joe Lyle, Gene Lyle, Doug Hargett, Bobby Gill Thompson, Earl Dean Thomason, Sammy Richardson and Dr. Jim Couch. Honorary pallbearers are the members of American Legion Post 31.
Buddy served as sheriff of Colbert County for 24 years. Before that, he worked as an Alcoholic Beverage Control agent. He served as police and fire commissioner for nine years and as a Tuscumbia City councilmember for another four years. Buddy was a Sergeant 1st Class in the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict as a member of the 31st Dixie Division. He served as president of the Alabama Sheriffs' Association and was on the executive committee of the state Law Enforcement Planning Agency.
He attended First Baptist Church, of Tuscumbia, where he served as a deacon. He served as commander of the American Legion. He was a member and served as an officer of numerous civic organizations including Sheffield Kiwanis, Tuscumbia Lions Club, a Mason, and the Colbert County Democratic Executive Committee. He was an avid supporter and board member of the Alabama Boys' and Girls' Ranch and the Boys' and Girls' Attention Home. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, and he enjoyed shaking hands and meeting people at the Labor Day festivities at Spring Park and Coon Dog Cemetery. If there was a political rally, you could find him there. He also was a graduate of Deshler High School and the University of North Alabama.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Covenant Christian School, a non-denominational school, at 1900 Covenant Drive, Tuscumbia, AL 35674.
The family would like to express our gratitude for the loving care given at the Cottage of the Shoals Rehabilitation Center and Dr. Jack McLendon.
Daddy lived the sheriff's motto: "To serve, to protect." He considered it an honor and a privilege to have served all the citizens of Colbert County.
