DEATH OF DR. ALEXANDER
-----
Aged Father of Dr. C.L. Alexander Passes Away at the Home of Mrs. George B. Hanna-Was Dean of the Dental Profession in Charlotte For Many Years and One of the City's Most Honored Citizens-The Funeral.

Dr. Amzi W. Alexander, one of the city's oldest and most honored citizens, passed away last night at 8:20 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George B. Hanna, on Tenth avenue, after a lingering illness of several months. Dr. Alexander was one of Charlotte's best-known citizens who for 40 years, in fact from the very commencement of his practice here, was the dean of the dental profession in this section of the State. He was the father of Dr. Charles L. Alexander, himself one of the eminent dental surgeons of the country. Dr. Alexander's end, at the extreme old age of 79 years, was very peaceful. He had lived far beyond the allotted span and when the summons came he was ready and waiting. Surviving him are six children, namely, Mrs. George B. Hanna, Miss Sallie Alexander, Dr. C.L. Alexander and Mrs. Bessie Alexander Patterson, all of Charlotte; Mrs. John Springs of Hickory and Mr. J.W. Alexander of Spartanburg, S.C. Dr. Alexander is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. W.C. Bostick of Van Buren, Ark., and Mrs. C.J. Nugent of Newcastle, Ky. The funeral will take place at the Hanna home this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, the service being in charge of Rev. Dr. William Morris Kincaid, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, of which the deceased was for many years a devoted member. The interment will be at Elmwood cemetery. The pall-bearers will be Dr. M.A. Bland, Mr. W.W. Ward, Mr. Frank H. Andrews, Mr. C.E. Hutchison, Mr. R.K. Davenport of Mt. Holly, Mr. Archie Graham, Mr. L.W. Sanders and Mr. J.R. Pharr.

Dr. Amzi Alexander was a native of Steele Creek township, having been born there November 16, 1830. His father was Mr. Robert McClung Alexander; his mother, prior to her marriage, was Miss Susan Rudisell. After obtaining the best eduction procurable from the public and private schools, Dr. Alexander started out to work himself and in 1856 was happily wedded to Miss Martha A. Wilson.

Then the war between the States began Dr. Alexander enlisted and after the conflict was over secured his honorable discharge. In 1860 he was graduated from the Baltimore Dental College and shortly after the war closed began the practice of his profession in Charlotte. By virtue of his ability and skill, he soon rose to eminence in this section of the State, which positiion he held until he retired a decade or more ago. For many years he was associated in practice with Dr. M.A. Bland, their offices being in what is now known as the Brown building on North Tryon street. Since the death of Professor Hanna, Dr. Alexander has been making his home with Mrs. Hanna on Tenth street. Those who knew Dr. Alexander loved him for his gentle and affable ways, his kindliness towards his fellows and his unfailing cheerfulness. His probity and character was of the highest. His influence in all circles was remarkable. Everybody trusted him. It is of interest in this connection to relect that Mr. James Harty and Dr. Alexander were perhaps the oldest clerks in Charlotte, the two having worked for Mr. J.C. Burroughs long before the war when still quite young boys.

Dr. Alexander's death removes from Charlotte another of her oldest and most revered citizens.
