The son of Canadian-born Charles & German-born Sarah Elizabeth (Berry) Adams, in 1860 he was a laborer living in North Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had brown hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York County October 24, 1862, and mustered into federal service at York November 21 as a private with Co. D, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"). However, he quickly transferred to the Patapsco Guards Maryland Infantry Company, volunteered for three years' service, and honorably discharged with the company August 17, 1865. He also enlisted in Baltimore November 25, 1865, with the regular army, assigned to Co. A, 4th U.S. Cavalry, and discharged November 23, 1866, most likely due to ill health given his brief tenure. (Regular army records were not located for him.)

He married Rebecca Smyser, widow of Jacob Smyser (143rd Pa Inf), December 24, 1872, in West Manchester Township, York County, and fathered Mahlon (b. @1878). In 1880, he lived in York Borough, York County, but moved to California, date unknown, and there died in a Stockton hospital from "uremia" with "shock from fractured femur" a contributing factor.
