Olive Jane Kilmer was born in Colesville, Broome County, New York on July 24, 1855, the first of what would be four daughters of William F and Sarah Jane Van Alstine Kilmer. She was raised in Colesville (1860 census) and Colchester, Delaware County, New York (1870 census).
In 1874, at the age of 19, she married Nelson Alger (1846-1919). By June 1, 1875, the couple was living in Masonville, Delaware County with their first-born, Wealthy Alger. The couple remained in Masonville where they had a dozen children:
