Mr Alfred E Atlee, a former Mayor and well known business man of Annapolis Royal, died at Miss Woodland's Nursing Home on Thursday morning. The deceased was born in Liverpool, England, 81 years ago and came to Nova Scotia when 19 years of age, settling in Pictou where he studied pharmacy and was engaged in the drug business. Fifty two years ago he came to Annapolis to take over the management of the late Dr AB Cunningham's drug store and 2 years later started in business for himself. He was burned out in the Big Fire of 1921 and the following year he built the large block at the corner of St George and Victoria Streets where he conducted business until his retirement in 1942. After his wife's sudden death in 1942, he made his home with his daughter, Mrs Sproul in Wolfville, but last May he returned to town to spend the summer at the nursing home in the house in which he had first lived when coming to Annapolis. During the trying years of the War of 1914-1918, he served as Mayor for 3 terms. He is survived by 3 daughters: (Greta) Mrs Robert Sproul of Wolfville; (Sue) Mrs Jerome Collins of Scarsdale, NY and (Olive) Mrs George W W Ross of Saint John, NB; 1 son, Dr HB Atlee, well known surgeon and author of Halifax and 7 grandchildren. The funeral took place on Saturday from St George's Church with Reverend Dr EM Baird officiating, with interment at Woodlawn Cemetery.
