OBITUARY - Abbie Lena Allee, daughter of W. R. Allee, was born Sept. 9, 1886, died Feb. 25, 1902 aged 16 years, 5 months and 16 days. Abbie was converted two years ago this winter, since which time she has lived a careful conscientious life. She was a faithful student of God's word and regular in the attendance of church and bible-school when it was possible for her to go. On the following Monday after she was stricken with disease her mother spoke to her in reference to whether it was well with her soul. Very soon she prayed afterwards saying, "Jesus will take care of me." As the disease advanced and she grew weaker, she exclaimed, "God's will be done."
Many times during the last few days of her illness she engaged in fervent prayer to God that his will might be done, saying if it was right she would be glad to get well and try to win her associates to the Lord.
When talking to God she said "I have been thinking more about living a Christian life for the last two months than ever before." In her death, father and mother have lost a dutiful child; children an affectionate sister; schoolmates a congenial companion; and all who knew her a true friend. . . .
Abbie was the granddaughter of Seth and Abbie Macy and this is the first death that has occurred in their family, which consistes of themselves, four children (all married) twelve agrandchidren and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Allee and family, with all the relatives have the sincerest sympathy of their host of friends, who can only commend them to the grace of God, which is declared to be sufficient for every trial."
Pastor Hanson preached a good sermon for the test; "Be ye also ready; for such an hour as ye think not the Son of Man cometh. " The pupils of the high school did the singing assisted by Grace Macy, Prof. Gifford, Ernest Rhine and Guy Dryden. The pallbearers were chosen from among her associates, and were Fred Wagaman, Fred Ratliff, Carl Painter, George Renaud, Harlan Snodgrass and Clifford Johnson.
The class at school of which Abbie was a member showed their love and affection for their beloved classmate by presenting a beautiful wreath of carnations and roses. The "Gates Ajar," a very beautifully decorated archway, within which were two floral gates made entirely of white roses, beckoning with mute appeal to the spirit of our loved one. The archway was composed of beautiful roses interspersed with carnations and heliotrope. Above the archway stood a pure white dove, with wings extended upward to indicate the spirit in its onward flight. This affectionate token of kind remembrance was rendered by her schoolmates, teachers, and our two literary clubs the girls division of which she was president. Other floral tokens of love which were given were a very beautiful cross made of carnations and were presented by Ethel Finch and a large bouquet of roses were send by Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton and Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Meredith of Ottumwa.
