Born to Robert and Eucie Lee, Helene met her husband at a birthday party in Washington, DC in 1942. They married one year later and he would go on to serve as butler to eight U.S. Presidents. In 1952 her husband started working at the White House as a pantry man, promoted to maitre d' in 1980 and retired in 1986. She died in her sleep the night before she and her husband had planned to go cast their vote for the first African-American who would be elected President of the United States. In addition to her husband of 65 years, Eugene C. Allen, she leaves behind a son, Charles (Ortaciana), five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Theola East and Althea Everett.

07/25/12 Update: Filming has commenced in New Orleans for the movie based on the life of Helene's husband, Eugene C. Allen. "The Butler" is an adaptation of the November 7, 2008 Washington Post article by Wil Haygood. Oprah Winfrey will portray Helene Allen.
