Theodore (Ted) Allen was an insurance agent for 50 years who was the first African American in the Upper Midwest to achieve the chartered life insurance (CLU) designation.He worked for North American Life and Casualty Co, now known as Allianz. His motto; "Look Ahead, Insure With Ted".

Ted arrived with his family to Minneapolis from Hannibal, Missouri at the age of 7. He graduated from Minneapolis North High School. Wanting to become a physician, he attended the University of Minnesota Medical School, but was forced to withdraw due to his family's financial struggles during the Great Depression. It was his only regret in life.

While working his job as a postal worker, he began his studies to obtain his Insurance Underwriter license. In July 1938, he began working for North American Life and Casualty Insurance Company. Ted won North American Life and Casualty's President's Award eight times.

He was a President of the St. Paul chapter of the NAACP and Secretary of the St. Paul Urban League, and was a Senior King Boreas of the St. Paul Winter Carnival.

For 15 years he was the principal sponsor of the Upper Midwest Bronze Amateur Golf Tournament.
