MORGANFIELD — Wilford C. Allen, 83, Morganfield, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.

He was a member of Sturgis First Baptist Church and was Sunday School teacher for teen boys. He was a welder at Island Creek Hamilton and P&M Coal Co. for 28 years and was a UMWA member and past president of the local UMWA. He participated in the 49th annual UMWA International Conference in 1983 to create mine safety that is done today. As mayor of Caseyville, he made Kentucky history as the first mayor to be elected by a coin toss.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jewel and Myrtle Allen; one son, Charles "Chuckie" Allen; two brothers, J.O. and Harold Allen; and one granddaughter, Megan Allen.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grangertown Baptist Church. Brother George Hollis will officiate. Burial will be in Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis and after noon Wednesday at Grangertown Baptist Church.
