Alice Gould Allen died on Sunday, June 1, 2008, at the Rochester Manor at the age of 97.

She was born to Wilbur and Anna (Rowell) Merrill on August 16, 1910, in Newton, New Hampshire, at the home, which is occupied today. She graduated from Brewster Academy and McIntosh College.

Over the years, she worked for various places, including Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Clarostat. She kept house for the Jewel family in Virginia, as well as others in Rhode Island and the Rectory at Our Lady of Peace in Berwick, Maine.

Alice was a member of the Pythian Sisters and the Beaver Dam Grange. She was an active woman with a heart of gold, putting others before herself. Through it all, it was her family that she cherished the most.

She was predeceased by her husband, Roger Allen; son, Myron Allen; granddaughter, Jennifer Atkins; great-grandson, Cory MacDonald; grandson-in-law, Charles Philbrick, Jr.; and friends Aura Wilson and Betty Rand.

She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Freeman, of Sanford; 4 grandchildren, Debbie Philbrick and her companion, Jim Currie, and Denise Atkins, all of Rochester, New Hampshire, and Jeff and Michael Atkins of Florida; 6 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Freeman and Rachel and Chris Philbrick, all of Rochester, Duncan Vince, of Florida, Emilee Atkins, of Indiana, and Brittany Atkins, of Georgia; 5 great-great-grandchildren, DeAndre Parker, Shai Stello, Ethen Gray, Chris G. Philbrick and Kennedy Sanfacon; and nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were to be held on Wednesday, June 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, June 5, from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by a 12 p.m. funeral at the Johnson Funeral Home at 26 Market Street in North Berwick, Maine. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in South Berwick, Maine.
