DEATH COMES TO ALPHEUS ALLEN

Alpheus S. Allen, for many years receiver of taxes of this city, prominent in business and tobacco manufacturing, and a lodgeman of wide prominence, died at 7:30 o'clock this morning at his home, 180 Carroll Street, following an attack of heart trouble, which seized him on Monday last.

The deceased, who was in his eighty-first year, was born in this city, and was educated in the Montclair school. His father, the late Stephen Allen, was the founder of the tobacco manufacturing firm of Allen, Reynolds & Dunning, and Mr. Allen, who succeeded him remained actively engaged in the business, retiring thirty-five years ago.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, Alpheus Allen, who was one of the leading members of the Old Blues, departed for the Civil War with his company, and was the only surviving member of the band remaining in Paterson. One more of the original members lives in Orange. Mr. Allen served throughout the war and came with the title of a captain.

The deceased became tax assessor during the '70s and Charles H. May, who retired in 1903, was associated with him as deputy tax assessor for many years. Mr. May was succeeded by the late William High. At that time, the office was located in the old city hall building on Washington Street, where the police headquarters is now located.

The deceased was a prominent member of the Hamilton Club, the Arcola Country Club, the Knights of Pythias, the Masonic order in this city, and was a director in the First National Bank, and the Paterson Savings Institution. He leaves a widow and three daughters.

The funeral will be held from the late home next Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.
