John F. Allen, Elizabeth, Ill., April 2 -- John F. Allen, 88, of Elizabeth, an uncle of Representative Leo E. Allen, of Galena, died about 4:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at his home on West Madison street. He suffered a stroke about two weeks ago.
John Francis Allen was born in Woodbine township on March 13, 1859, the son of John and Elizabeth Allen. He attended rural schools in this community and later engaged in farming. On April 16, 1878 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Ellen Haring. They located on a farm in Woodbine township. Mrs. Allen died on March 17, 1924. About 10 years ago Mr. Allen moved to Elizabeth.
He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Nona Williams, of Elizabeth; one son, John L. Allen, of Elizabeth; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. A grandson, Richard Allen, lost his life in World War II and his name has been placed on the Toma-Reusch-Allen American Legion memorial.
Mr. Allen was one of a family of 10 children, only one of whom now survives, Joseph Allen of Galena.
Mr. Allen was highway commissioner of Woodbine township for a number of years, was the first president of the Farmers' Co-operative Creamery company, at Elizabeth, and was also a member of the board of directors of the Farmers' Hatchery and Exchange of Elizabeth, a position he held at the time of his death.
Funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the home and at 1:15 o'clock at the Elizabeth Methodist church. Rev. J. M. Beck, pastor, will officiate and burial will be made in the Elizabeth cemetery.
