Barbara Learn Allen
Barbara Learn Allen, age 91, passed peacefully on Sunday evening, January 31, 2010.
Born in Cortland, NY on June 20, 1918 to Helen Payne Learn and Alonzo R. Learn, Barbara was reared in the Finger Lakes Region along with her younger sister Dorothy. While attending Cortland Normal School, she met the love of her life the late Reginald Brown Allen who was attending nearby Cornell University. Upon graduating, she taught in an elementary school in Dryden, NY which utilized both her teaching skills and her love of young people. Barbara and Reg were married in April, 1941, while he was serving in the Army during World War II. They had 2 sons: David (Linda) of Cochranville, PA and Jon of Islamorada, FL. The Allens relocated to Delaware when Reg joined the DuPont Company, proudly working there for 29 years. Barbara became an enthusiastic Delawarean, appreciating its natural beauty, unique history, birds and abundant wildlife. While the main focus of Barbara's long and happy life was her husband of 59 years and her two sons, she continued to express her love of children by serving as homeroom mother, substitute teaching and teaching Sunday school. She served both as a deacon and an elder at Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church. Her other interests included collecting antiques, listening to Big Band music, dancing with her husband, reading, and baking for her family, neighbors and friends.
Barbara had 3 grandchildren to whom she was devoted: Christine (Charles) Allen Kopin of Stratford, CT; David Patrick (Kristie) Allen of Aston, PA: and Matthew (fiancée Lindsay Garrison) Allen of Manhattan, NY. She is also survived by 4 great grandchildren to whom she was Gramma Barb. Her sister, Dorothy Green of Cortland, NY survives her as well as 11 nieces and nephews living across the country. Barbara will be missed and fondly remembered by her family, friends, neighbors and all whose lives she touched. Known for her eternal optimism and her positive approach to life, she had the ability to pass that confidence on to others.
Please join the family celebration of her happy life on Saturday, February 13, at 11 am, at Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church. Family and friends are invited to visitation starting at 10 am.
In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the hospice of your choice.
