Daughter of Almon Hitchcock Barber and Fanny G. (Ormes) Barber both from Vermont. She was listed in the 1860 census where she was the only child in the home and here she was recorded as being a 4 year old(born in 1856) and in Hampton, Washington, NY. It's clear she wasn't born in 1861 as shown on her gravestone, but not clear as to the actual year of her birth. Beginning with the 1880 census, and in each subsequent census records, Ella is listed as being born anywhere from 1861-1864. In the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 census records consistently gave the place of her birth as New York.

She married Walter E. Allen (born 1861) on June 8, 1887 in Lu Verne Township, Kossuth, Iowa and they were the parents of two boys: Clifford John and Harold Judson Allen. Walter was employed as a traveling salesman, and died between 1900 and 1910.

Adella lived with (or near) her sons while in Minneapolis over the span of at least 3 decades.
