Born in Hildesheim, Germany. Married July 4th, 1852 to Theresa Strottmann (1828-1903), from Everode, Germany. He was a "Turner" or shaper of wood and proudly listed that as his occupation throughout his life. He, Theresa, Marie Magdalene (Mack,1853-1931), Johanne Auguste (1855- )and Wilhelm (1857-1876) emigrated to the US from Klein Freden, Ger., landing in New Orleans November 4, 1857.

Later, after working in St. Louis, MO, he enlisted in the Union infantry (3 mos.) and upon mustering-out in October, 1861 enlisted in the 2nd MO Light Artillery serving until his mustering-out in October, 1863. Returning to St. Louis he worked as a "Turner" until his death. Theresa was the beneficiary of his Army pension from 1890 until her death.

Besides the three German-born children, the couple had :
Charles J. Sr. (1862-1920), Henry (1863-1935) Mary (Stahl,1868-1940),Sophia(Anderson, 1866-1892).

The 1870 Census lists Laura, b. 1863, Charlotte, b.1858 and Maria, born 1861. These last 3 may be in error as there are no further records although in 1900 Theresa lists "9 children, 4 living".

The 2 boys worked independently as "Carpenters & Stair-Makers". Henry (#54875944), and Lena Ellinghaus (1865-1935) with 5 boys, produced most of the St. Louis Almstedts. Charles J. Sr.(#52278976) and Sarah Dwyer (1866-1929) had 2 boys, 5 girls.
