Cecilia Valentine (Glynn) Althouse, 85, of St. Elizabeth Health Care Center, East Hartford, wife of the late Paul S. Althouse, passed away Monday (October 23, 2000) at Hartford Hospital. She was born in Ridgewood, NJ, to the late John and Maysie Glynn. The family moved to Clinton, in 1933. Cecilia attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, Ohio, before moving to New York City, NY to continue her musical studies.

In 1942, she was accepted by Paul S. Althouse as one of his selected private voice pupils. Mr. Althouse, a leading Tenor at the Metropolitan Opera for 30 years and Cecilia were married in 1950. There after she devoted all of her time to assisting Paul in his studio in New York City, NY until his death of cancer in 1954.

In 1961, Cecilia returned to spend the rest of her life in Connecticut. During the 16 years she held various positions in the shore line area and was an outspoken member of the Clinton Planning and Zoning Commission, for six years.

During the later years of her life she has been a private piano teacher, took college courses at both Mitchell College and Connecticut College and refined her skills of being an award winning artist in the shore line towns.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Gerald A. Glynn of Lucerne, CA, Robert L. Glynn of Clinton, John J. Glynn of Storrs, and Frank Glynn of Clinton. Cecilia is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bucknell University, School of Music, Director of Gifts, Lewisburg, PA 17837, in memory of Dr. Paul S. Althouse. There are no calling hours.

Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Ave., East Hartford has charge of final arrangements.

Interment will be at the Ferncliff Mausoleum, Hartsdale, Westchester County, NY.
