Ernest Emanuel Althouse, age 101, of Willow Street, PA, died on Thursday at the Lakeside at Willow Valley.

Born in Strausstown, PA, he was the son of the late Adam Joseph and Minnie May Burkey Althouse and the husband of the late Elizabeth Righter Plank Althouse, who died in 1995.

He spent his adolescent years in Hamburg, PA, where his father managed the local electric and gas utility company.

He was a 1922 graduate of Hamburg High School and a 1926 graduate, cum laude, from Lehigh University with a degree in electrical engineering. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu, national honorary engineering societies.

He was associated with Duquesne Light Company in Pittsburgh, PA from August 1926 until May 1928, when he joined Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation in Poughkeepsie, NY. He served in various capacities of responsibility in Kingston, NY and in Poughkeepsie over the years before he was appointed Vice President in Charge of Operations in 1954. He became Senior Vice President in 1964. In December 1967, he was elected a member of the Board of Directors, and became President of the company on April 2, 1968. He served in that capacity until his retirement on April 1, 1975, when he became Vice Chairman of the Board and served as such until his resignation from the Board on December 31, 1986.

He was a former Director of the Utilities Mutual Insurance Company and of Mid-Hudson Pattern, Inc. He was a registered professional engineer in the states of Pennsylvania and New York, a life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and a member of the Society of Gas Lighting.

In July 1971, he was awarded honorary membership in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was a member of Franklin Lodge #221 (F&AM, Pittsburgh, PA) and of the A.A.S.R., Valley of Pittsburgh, PA.

For many years he and his wife had lived in Poughkeepsie, NY until 1986, when they moved to Willow Street. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Lancaster, PA, and an associate member of Zion United Church of Christ, New Providence, PA.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Ernest's Life Celebration graveside service in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Guilderland, NY, on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Gregory Zajac officiating.
