She was the daughter of Thomas Weir Acheson (died 1862) and Catherine Leavitt Hooker. Her parents were married in 1840 at Columbus, Ohio. After the death of her father, Thomas, her mother, Catherine married Hosea W. Miller in 1865. On August 22, 1864 as Julia Acheson, she married Elijah S. Alvord at Franklin County, Ohio.
