Death of Mrs. Alford
Mrs. Alvord, widow of General Benjamin Alvord, paymaster-general of the army, whose death occurred on Thursday in this city, was an exceedingly amiable and lovely woman, whose decease will be mourned by a large circle of friends.
She had been a resident of Washington since 1872, when her husband was appointed paymaster-general by President Grant.
He died a year ago last October.
Mrs. Alvord’s health did not become seriously affected until July last, when she began to suffer from the disease which finally caused her death,,
She called on some friends week before last. She had become very weak, and sunk rapidly during the early days of last week.
Her only daughter, Mrs. Craig, wife of Professor Thomas Craig, of John Hopkins University, was with her during her last days, as was her youngest son, William Alvord, who is 19 years of age.
Her other two sons, Lieutenant Benjamin Alvord, 20th infantry U.S.A., and Alden Alvord, who is connected with Union Trust Company in New York, arrived here yesterday.
The funeral occurs at her late residence, 1207 Q street, on Sunday at 4 o’clock, and her body will be taken to Rutland, Vermont, for burial.
