James Foley Alzheimer, 47, of Otter Tail Lake, formerly of Breckenridge, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, east of Rush Lake in Otter Tail County.

James Foley Alzheimer (a.k.a.) James Drey of Otter Tail Lake was born Jan. 3, 1953, to Lila Foley and the late James Drey in Breckenridge. He grew up and attended St. Mary's School and graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1971. He was involved in theater and was named Mr. BHS in his senior year. He attended St. Cloud State University in 1971-1972 and graduated cum laude from Moorhead State College with an English major in 1978. In 1973, he married Sandra Worner. They lived in Breckenridge with their two children, Jill and Jason, until their move to Otter Tail Lake in 1994. In 1999, he married Jolie Sasseville. They made their home on Otter Tail Lake with Jolie's daughters, Elise and Chelsea, until the time of their deaths. He worked as a radio announcer, technician and commentator for commercial and public radio stations throughout his life. He began his high school English teaching career in 1978, in Ashby. He also taught at Colfax, N.D., from 1979 to 1995. He was then employed as an educator by both Battle Lake and Underwood school districts from 1996-1999. Most recently he was the Community Education Supervisor at New York Mills. He and his wife, Jolie, founded the publishing company, Stone House Press, Inc., in 1999. They also wrote for Lake and Home Magazine. His community involvement was extensive including vice-chair of Head of the Red Community Theatre, Breckenridge from 1986-1995; chair of Otter Tail Community Theatre from 1996 -1997; chair and member of Lake Region Arts Council from 1989-1993. He was an extremely active Democrat holding several positions within the party as well as serving as a county, state and national delegate.

In 1998, he was the endorsed party candidate for the Minnesota House of Representatives. Other awards and recognition he received were the Mental Health Association of Minnesota Media Award, 1983; The National Endowment For the Humanities Fellow in 1990; Playwright's Center One-On-One, 1992; Poetry Chapbook Award, Second Place Poetry Harbor, 1995. His lifelong love and ambition was writing. He wrote three full-length plays, a novel, a screenplay, and an abundance of poetry. His published materials include &uot;Bigbang&uot; (Chapbook), and most recently, &uot;The Possibility of Joy.&uot; He was well-known for his thought provoking and controversial columns in the Daily News, Fargo Forum, as well as other newspapers. He loved the serenity of the lake country where he could enjoy fishing, swimming and running and skiing in the woods.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Drey; his wife, Jolie Sasseville; and his step-daughter, Chelsea Sasseville-Melvin. Survivors include his daughter, Jill Alzheimer of Minneapolis; a son, Jason (Laisa) Alzheimer of Eden Prairie; his parents, Bernard and Lila Alzheimer of Breckenridge; two sisters, Annie Alzheimer of West Fargo and Carla (Chris) Berger of Sauk Rapids; a step-daughter, Elise Epperson of Richville; his mother-in-law, Kati Sasseville of rural Fergus Falls; and his former wife, Sandie Worner.

Visitation: Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home

Service: 7 p.m. Thursday at Joseph Vertin and Sons Funeral Home in Breckenridge.

An additional memorial service honoring Jim, Jolie and Chelsea is planned at 2 p.m. Saturday at A Center for the Arts, Fergus Falls.

Driver in Sasseville-Alzheimer crash critical

The driver of a pickup which hit and killed three Richville residents Saturday is listed in critical condition. [The driver] of New York Mills, was driving southbound on a township road at about 7 p.m. when he failed to yield to a car eastbound on County Road 54 near Ottertail, said the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Department. James Drey Alzheimer, 47, Jolie Sasseville, 41, and Jolie's daughter Chelsea Sasseville-Melvin, 9, were killed in the accident.... The crash remains under investigation. A memorial service for Alzheimer, Sasseville and Sasseville-Melvin will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Center for the Arts, Fergus Falls . A celebration of their lives will be held at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Elise Epperson (Sasseville's daughter) scholarship fund at Security State Bank, Fergus Falls, or the Jolie Sasseville Memorial Fund at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center.
