Isabel A. Lee was one of ten children born to the late Professor Daniel Ambrose II and Elizabeth Redmond Ambrose on August 6, 1905. Two of the children died in infancy.

At that time the family resided in Pickens, Mississippi, where Professor Ambrose was principal of the ninth grade school. There was no high school in their small community, so the children were enrolled at Jackson College to complete their higher education. We now know it as Jackson State University.

Leaving Mississippi, she attended and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Health from Clark University in Atlanta, Georgia. She later received a Master of Arts degree in Public Health from Yale University. Isabel's teaching career included work in Jacksonville, Florida, and Jackson College in Jackson, Mississippi. Her awards and areas of service were many. She was most proud of being the first Black in Mississippi to serve as a Girl Scout Field Director, Health Department Supervisor, and a member of the Indianola School Board of Education. She was a proud member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the Mississippi Teacher's Association, the National Council of Negro Women, the Board of Directors for Housing Development, the Indianola Garden Club, and the Raspberry United Methodist Church. The City of Indianola has honored her as an outstanding citizen for her civic work in many organizations.

Mrs. Lee was predeceased by her mother and father, Professor and Mrs. Daniel Ambrose, II; her two sisters and five brothers in order: Lillian Carter, James McWillie, Daniel Webster, Jr., Wendell Phillips, Leo Murray, Theodore Redmond, Eva Leonia, and Isabel ("The Baby"), Isabel's husband, John, one son died at an early age and son, John H. Lee, Jr. To cherish her memory, two grandsons, John H. Lee III and Steven L. Lee; many nieces and nephews, a sister-in-law, cousins, many, many, many friends.
