Luis G. Amoros died peacefully at the Pathways Hospice Care Center in Loveland on May 22. He was 86. Luis was born in 1923 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1939, he graduated from Central High School in Santurce, and in 1943 he received a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico. Luis served in the U. S. Army in 1946. For the next five years, he worked as a Chemist in the Research Laboratory of the Economic Development Administration (Fomento) on the island. He went on to complete a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh in 1955. Luis was the Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at the School of Medicine in San Juan for three years before returning to Fomento as the Assistant Director of the Industrial Research Laboratory in 1958. His love for teaching led him to the Chemistry Department of the University of Puerto Rico where he taught Organic Chemistry until he retired in 1975.In 1966, Luis spent a sabbatical year at Duke University doing post-doctoral work in the field of Organic Chemistry. His second sabbatical in 1973 was at Colorado State University where the Amoros family fell in love with Fort Collins and its people, and decided to make it their home.He was a 60 plus year member of the American Chemical Society and had several publications in the field of organic synthesis and natural products.Luis is survived by his wife, Sylvia whom he married in 1957; son, Luis M. Amoros and wife Kristen; daughter, Sylvia Ivette and husband Todd Huddleson; grandchildren, Jamison and Nikolette Amoros and Rachel and Steven Huddleson.The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the physicians who cared for Luis and to the staff of Poudre Valley Hospital and the Pathways Hospice Care Center in Loveland who gave him such loving and compassionate care.The family will hold an open house to celebrate Luis' life on Friday, May 29 from 5 - 8 p, at the Clubhouse of the Hamlet Condominiums, 5151 Boardwalk Drive. They request that any memorial contributions be made to the Food Bank of Larimer County or to Pathways Hospice of Larimer County.
