Rachel Alvernaz

Los Gatos resident Rachel M. Alvernaz died at home July 7 of heart failure. She was 91.

Born Dec. 29, 1907 in Lynn, Wisconsin, Alvernaz settled in Los Gatos in 1923, where she graduated from Los Gatos High School. She married Joseph Alvernaz, after which the couple owned and operated the former Sun Ray Dairy in town. She also served as president of the Los Gatos Elementary School PTA, the Santa Clara County Cattlewomen's Association and the Los Gatos branch of the American War Mothers.

Alvernaz was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Joseph P. Alvernaz, as well as seven sisters and three brothers. Survivors include daughters Beatrice Marchetti and Gloria Hampel; sons Joseph Alvernaz Jr. and Robert Alvernaz; grandchildren Andy, Alan, John, Clayton, Joseph and Lacy Alvernaz; Gina, Mario and Leo Marchetti; Deborah Clark; Rebecca Steele; Patti Turner; Lynda and David McGee; Terri Smith, Carole Anderson and Gina Strong; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; brothers Wiley and Donald Angel; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services have been held, with interment at Los Gatos Memorial Park.

Donations may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation or to a charity of choice.
