Michael Brownell's grandmother, Justina Emilia (Emma) Rislachius, emigrated from Isokyro, Finland (see www.isokyro.fi) and arrived at Ellis Island on the SS Saint Louis as a steerage passenger headed for Oregon on August 7, 1896. She is listed on Ellis Island records as "Emeligia Rislakues." She was the daughter of Johan Gustaf Rislachius and Leena Jaakontytar Talvitie of Isokyro. She went by the name of "Emma Risla" until her marriage to Ralph Browne in 1902.
Emma gave birth to Michael's father, Lawrence Arthur Browne (later changed to Brownell) in 1903. Her second husband was Oscar Applegren. Oscar and Emma had one child, Ansel Oscar Applegren ("Baby Applegren") who died as an infant. They lived on Grahn's Lane NE in Brownsville.

A photo of the Browne family appears in the 1909 Kitsap County Plat Book. Emma is also listed on Page 19 in Book III of Kitsap County History published by the Kitsap County Historical Society. A new grave marker was installed in 2012 (see photo).
