Domenica (Sis) N. E. Applegren, born September 14, 1918, was a long-time resident of Concord, MA. She died peacefully on Wednesday March 11th at her residence at Concord Health Care Center after suffering a stroke.

She is predeceased by her devoted husband Folke E. Applegren, 1906-1973 and was the beloved mother of Joan A. Powell of Pacific, MO and Linda M. Shelales of Bolton, MA. She was the daughter of Joseph Mazzeo, 1892-1943, and his wife Anita (Denaro) Mazzeo 1899-1977 of W. Concord; sister to Santos (Johnny) Mazzeo, 1917-1989 of W. Acton, MA; Josephine (Toots) Anderson 1920-2008 of W. Concord, MA; Joseph (Mal) Mazzeo 1922-2003 of Avon, MA; and Raphaela (Ella) Nelson 1925-1998 of Carlisle, MA. She leaves seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.

Domenica grew up in West Concord, attended the old Harvey Wheeler School and graduated from Concord High School 1936. In school she enjoyed playing baseball, softball and field hockey and was elected Secretary of her class. In later years, as a member of the Reunion Committee, she greatly enjoyed organizing class reunions.

After Domenica graduated from high school she worked for Conant Machine & Steel, in West Concord, as Bookkeeper and Secretary. For a time, after her two daughters were born, Domenica became a Sterling Silver Sales Consultant. Soon after that she worked part time for Wallace Conant again as his secretary while he wrote his innovative ‘New English' book. When Mr. Conant moved his business out of Concord, Domenica started working for Drs. Flavin and Kondon as an Office Clerk in their dental office. At this time she attended Tufts Dental Assisting School in Boston and earned her Dental Assistant Certificate and pin in 1965.

When her husband Folke retired, they moved to Florida, where they briefly enjoyed life before Folke contracted bone cancer. Domenica then returned to Concord so Folke could receive the best medical care and have the support of friends and family. After Folke died, she worked for GenRad until she found a job as Clerk for the Town of Concord, where she worked until she retired.

Domenica took many night classes and particularly enjoyed dance and studying Swedish. She was very artistic and Tole painted many beautiful pieces, including trays and a chair. During the war Domenica folded bandages for the troops at the Acton fire station in South Acton, and also earned a "Home Nursing" pin. She never forgot the sacrifice of our American soldiers during World War II, loved to donate to their cause, and in 2005 was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She felt it was important to give ‘a little something' and faithfully contributed to local community, library and many church organizations. Domenica was also known for her thoughtfulness and for sending cards to those who were sick or suffering in any way.

Domenica loved to meet old friends at the Dunkin Donuts coffee shop in Acton on Rte 62, where she made many new friends. Despite being Widowed for over 30 years, she enjoyed life, focused on the present, had a strong will and a very positive attitude. Even in later years Domenica always stooped to pick up pennies on the street, believing they were a blessing from God. Everyone who knew Domenica came to love and respect her. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be held on Saturday morning, March 14th from 9:30 until 11 am at the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center followed by service in the Dee Funeral Home at 11 am.

Interment will follow in the family burial plot in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Bedford Street, Concord, Massachusetts.
