Rosary for Abel Arguello, 59, of Slaton will be at 7:30 p.m. today in Englunds Funeral Service Chapel with Phillip Maldonado officiating.
Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with the Rev. Lawrence Hemp, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Englewood Cemetery under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service.
Arguello died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, in St. Mary Hospital.
He was born April 3, 1939, in Waelder. He moved to West Texas in 1941. He attended Cooper schools, and he graduated from Slaton High School. He attended Texas Tech University. He worked for the Moss Gordon Delinting Plant and Huser Feed Store. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He married Alice Mendoza on Sept. 3, 1964.
He worked for Pinkie's Inc. in 1964, and he became a manager in 1968. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service, and in 1978, he became the first Hispanic supervisor in Lubbock. He was appointed postmaster of Muleshoe in 1987.
He coached in the Slaton Little League and Little Dribblers. He was a member of the Postmasters' League, Lubbock Toastmasters, Muleshoe Country Club, Bailey County Selective Service Board, Parish Counsel of the Immaculate Conception Church in Muleshoe, Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He was an officer of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was the first Hispanic member, officer and treasurer of the Muleshoe Rotary Club. He was the first Hispanic city councilman in Muleshoe. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1997.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Andrew of Los Fresnos, Arthur of Houston and Albert of Hobbs, N.M.; his mother, Juanita Arguello of Slaton; a brother, Eugene of Slaton; four sisters, Nieves Arguello and Rachel Reyes, both of Slaton, Irene Cardenas of Beaumont and Mary Flores of Lubbock; and seven grandchildren.
