Abe died of cancer at Parkview Hospital from a cancer attributed to his participation in nuclear tests during his military career.

Drafted into the army in January 1951, he was assigned to a unit at Desert Rock, Nevada. He was assigned to act as a driver for other army personnel conducting atomic bomb tests. Within his first 3 weeks of arrival he witnessed 3 atomic explosions.

Abe was still fighting for recognition of the link between his illness and his military duty at the time of his death. He left a wife, 13 children and a huge amount of bills. His wife continued the fight for the government to recognize its responsibility in her husband's death.
