Clarence J. Arlen, 94, of 2230 Theda Drive, died Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 8 Monday, Aug. 17, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a parish scripture wake service at 7:30 p.m.

He was born on Feb. 17, 1915, on the family farm near Farley, Iowa, son of John and Anna (Kofmehl) Arlen. He married Dolores Fischer on Jan. 11, 1939, at Annunciation Catholic Church, Lattnerville, Iowa; she preceded him in death on May 5, 1990.

Clarence was a longtime farmer, retiring in 1958. After his retirement from farming, he drove a school bus for the Dubuque Community School District for over 20 years.

He was a member of St. Anthony's Parish for over 60 years. He also was an original members of the Dubuque Izaak Walton League.

Clarence was an avid hunter and fisherman most of his life and also enjoyed gardening, woodworking, card-playing and following the Chicago Cubs. Most of all, Clarence treasured his family and always looked forward to their visits.

Surviving are his daughter, Margery (Donald) Herkes, of Guttenberg, Iowa; his son, James (Judy) Arlen, of Asbury, Iowa; six grandchildren, Tracy Gansemer, Dee Gansemer, Bev (Paul) O'Halloran, David Gansemer, Jennifer Arlen, Scott (Kathy) Arlen; a stepgranddaughter, Pam Herkes; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marie Schmitt, of Rickardsville, Iowa, and Eda Schultz, of Dubuque.

He also was preceded in death by a brother, Charles, and a sister, Rita Breitbach.
