OBITUARY :
MARY ARLEN ALLEN, 90, of Hagerstown, Md., died Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home in Boonsboro, Md.

Born Jan. 25, 1922, in Naperville, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Homer H. and Mazie M. Jennings Arlen.

She received her bachelor's degree in French and English at North Central College in 1942, and her master's degree in geography at Indiana University in 1949.

She served in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) division of the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II at the United States Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill., from 1950 to 1953. She also worked as a geographer in military intelligence in Washington, D.C.

In 1953, she married George E. Allen, who died in January 1999.

She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.

She was a member of American Association of University Women Hagerstown Branch; Woman's Civic Club and the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert J. and William H. Arlen.

She is survived by two daughters, Jane Gleason and husband, Fred, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Gail Memler and husband, William, of Ashburn, Va.; one son, James Allen and wife, Diane, of Fairfax Station, Va.; two grandchildren, Jennifer Allen and Daniel Allen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private services and burial will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.
