He may have enlisted as a Private in Company I of the 18th Virginia Cavalry in the Confederate Army, nearly all of whose men were drawn from Hampshire Co. Virginia.
He may also have been the William J. Armstrong from Virginia who was promoted to Captain, Assistant Commissary of Subsistence, in the Confederate Army in the Summer of 1862, serving in the Bristoe campaign with the Artillery 2nd Corps under Brigadier-General Armistead L. Long, and to Major therein at the end of 1864.

In the June 1900 Census of Elkins Town, Leadsville District, Randolph Co, WV, living in a Railway Soc. home were a William J. Armstrong, boarder, born 25 Dec. 1838 in WV (parents also b. WV), aged 61, married 30 years (ie m.c1870), occ. Cash N. Va. G. (or C?) A. R., and Frances N. Armstrong, also a boarder, born 26 Jan. 18(48?), also married 30 years (so presumably his wife) in MD (her parents also born in MD). The names, age, counties of birth, marriage, & State fit, but the railway connection is perhaps a little doubtful. Nevertheless. it is probable that these two are identical to those recorded here.
