He mustered in with Company D, 151st Pennsylvania Volunteers on 24 October 1862. He received wounds at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania 1 July 1863 and later died of pyaemia (blood poisoning / septicemia) at McKim's Mansion General Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. His burial date is listed as 6 September 1863, but the VA lists his death 11 September.
