The 1940 census shows that George Gamaliel Arnold was 16 years old, born in the Dominican Republic, and living in the Bronx, N.Y.C., on Prospect Ave. with his married sister Anna Reyes 20 (1919-1999) and her husband Paul Reyes and two brothers; William Lester Arnold 13 (1926-1994) (FAG 120228463) and John 20, and a one month old niece, Marisha Reyes. The July 26, 1945 WW2 Jewish Servicemen card listed his mother as Anna Gracia (Aybar) Arnold living at 730 Prospect Ave., Bronx, N.Y.. There are 1920 census records showing his father being John George Arnold 33 - a U.S. Marine, born in Tennessee in 1883, living in the Dominican Republic on a U.S. Marine base with his wife Anna 23 and daughter Anna 1.
George was a U.S. Army corporal in the 204th Engineers, Company B. The 204th Engineer Combat Battalion landed in Normandy one month after D-Day (June 6, 1944) and had assisted the U.S. Army in pushing through France and over the French/German border and were in Germany by March 1945. They were building roads and temporary bridges over the various rivers to assist in transporting tanks, equipment, supplies, and combat troops while they were pushing the Germans back towards the Rhine River. He was killed on March 4, 1945.
